Insurance
Your insurance coverage must be at or better than Alaska State Minimums.
Alaska requires any drivers to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance coverage. You can go beyond these, depending on what your driving circumstances are, but you must at least meet the state’s requirements. Failure to do so can result in some severe penalties.
Outlined below are the mandatory liability insurance minimums for the state of Alaska:
- $50,000 bodily injury per person
- $100,000 bodily injury per accident
- $25,000 property damage per accident
Alaska requires drivers to carry proof of insurance, and you must present it if asked to by law enforcement.
Insurance Add-ons Available
Collision Damage Warranty: This type of insurance covers damage to your car when in an accident up to $35,000 with a $500 deductible, no matter who is at fault.
Renter’s Contingency Liability Insurance: Renter’s Contingent Liability Insurance is coverage which acts in the place of a primary automobile policy for the renter of a vehicle who does not maintain a personal automobile policy.

Cleaning
Alaska Vehicle Rentals takes great pride in the maintenance, appearance and cleanliness of our vehicles. We carefully photo-document the exterior and interior of each vehicle pre and post rental for our records.
Van Exterior– Normal Road dirt to the exterior is to be expected. If the vehicle is dirtier than normal road travel, such a mud in the wheel wells, dirty to the point of not being able to see out the windows or been under a tree (ex. sap, bird poop, needles, leaves), we ask that you run the van through the car wash (Laser Wash on the corner of Spenard & Minnesota is quick and inexpensive for the low roof vans). If exterior cleaning of the van takes the detailer longer than one hour, an exterior cleaning fee of $75.00 per hour will be charged.
Van Interior – Please make every effort to remove all trash from the vehicle; it really says a lot about who you are. Items that tend to get lost/left behind are typically under trash or are under seats (especially dark items such as binoculars). Trash tends to make the vehicles smell and items such as chocolate or candies will melt into the seats/carpet.
Normal foot dirt from sightseeing/hiking is to be expected. If the van floor is heavily soiled, please use the free vacuums at the Laser Wash on the corner of Spenard & Minnesota before returning the van. Please make sure no food is left in the seats or on the floors as it makes the van smell and can melt into the fabrics requiring extra cleaning. Vans that require more than one hour to clean the interior will be charged a cleaning fee of $75.00 per hour.
Negligent care of the interior of the van such a drawing on the seats, cut/torn seats, soiled seats, broken plastics/knobs, missing parts, torn ceiling fabric or any other interior damages will be assessed on a per case basis and renter will be solely responsible for all required repairs associated to your damages.
Rims & Tires
Tires are carefully photo-documented before and after each rental to record any damages that may occur during your rental.
Each one of our vehicles is equipped with a spare tire and a jack with lug wrench. It is the sole responsibility of the renter to replace the tire with the spare provided in case of a flat tire.
We do not provide flat tire replacement service. Tire repairs are the sole responsibility of the renter.
The renter is responsible for the cost of the replacement tire and/or rim.
Unfortunately, there are road hazards such as wildlife, frost heaves and rocks. Damage caused to the tires and rims are the sole responsibility of the renter
Please drive carefully.
Windshields
Windshields are carefully photo-documented before and after each rental to record any damages that may occur during your rental.
Windshield damage, repairs and/or replacement is the sole responsibility of the renter. Alaska has many paved roads with grit and rocks that kick up and damage windshields. To avoid windshield damage, do not tailgate the vehicle in front of you; give yourself plenty of room between vehicles. Do not drive on gravel roads; sometimes this is unavoidable, so drive slowly on gravel and stay far away from other vehicles to avoid rocks being thrown. Avoid being too close to other vehicles in a turn; naturally rocks get kicked up on curves.
Please be aware that a full windshield replacement can cost upwards of $1000.00+ due to windshield cost, labor and recalibration of the electronics that are attached to the windshield. A full windshield replacement is required by Alaska State Law when the windshield has been cracked and begins to travel (lines that begin to run from the crack).
A rock chip (impact) that has not spread can be professionally filled for $90.00 per rock chip at the renter’s expense.
Smoking
NO SMOKING OF ANY KIND (vape, cigarette, marijuana, cigars, cigarillos or any other smoking) is prohibited in any of Alaska Vehicle Rentals vehicles. There will be a $250.00 smoking fee should the rental vehicle have an odor of smoke in rental vehicle. Customer will be responsible for any damage to any seats (Cigarette Burns).
Spare Tire and Jack
Each one of our vehicles is equipped with a spare tire and a jack with lug wrench. It is the sole responsibility of the renter to replace the tire with the spare provided in case of a flat tire.
We do not provide flat tire replacement service. Tire repairs are the sole responsibility of the renter.
The renter is responsible for the cost of the replacement tire and/or rim.
Unfortunately, there are road hazards such as wildlife, frost heaves and rocks. Damage caused to the tires and rims are the sole responsibility of the renter
Please drive carefully.
Tolls, Parking Fees & Tickets
There are very few roads with tolls in Alaska. The Whittier Tunnel is one example of a toll road. The renter is solely responsible for the cost of toll roads. If you are in a larger passenger van, naturally your toll fee will be higher than a sedan.
Parking fees are the sole responsibility of the renter at any destination in Alaska. The only exception is the Alaska Park Valet Parking lot; Alaska Vehicle Rentals handles the parking fee for your van pickup and return convenience.
Parking tickets and infractions do occur sometimes. Parking tickets and infractions are the sole responsibility of the renter. Should a parking ticket or fine go unpaid by the renter, Alaska Vehicle Rentals will pursue your fees plus an additional $75.00 administrative fee.
